Former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress after weeks of political speculation surrounding his next move.
Mimiko formally joined the APC on May 14, 2026, at the party’s Ward 7 Secretariat in Ondo West Local Government Area, months after distancing himself from PDP activities and publicly resigning from the opposition party in April.
Speaking during the event, the former governor said the performance and reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu influenced his decision to align with the ruling party.
He praised initiatives such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and ongoing discussions around decentralised policing and state police reforms.
“There are a lot of good things being done by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government,” Mimiko stated while pledging support for efforts aimed at national development and political stability.
The former governor was received into the APC by Ondo State party leaders alongside several loyalists and political associates, including former lawmakers and ex-government officials who defected with him.
Political observers believe Mimiko’s defection could strengthen the APC’s influence in Ondo State ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly within Ondo Central Senatorial District where he remains a major political figure.
