Former Benue governor Gabriel Suswam dumps PDP, says decision was a difficult one

Former Benue State governor and senator, Gabriel Suswam, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Suswam announced his resignation in a letter he personally signed and addressed to his ward in Mbagber Council Ward, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. The letter was released to journalists in Makurdi on Wednesday.

He said leaving the party was a difficult decision, noting that the PDP gave him many chances to serve Nigeria over the years.

According to him, the party provided the platform that enabled him to serve as a member of the House of Representatives, governor of Benue State, and later as a senator.

Suswam explained that his decision was mainly due to the unresolved internal crisis currently rocking the PDP. He said repeated efforts by concerned party members to fix the problems had failed.

The former governor described the PDP as a party trapped in constant internal conflict, with disputes over leadership, structure, discipline, and ideology still unresolved.

He added that the party, once known for unity and internal democracy, is now struggling to function properly due to endless disagreements.

Suswam said he could no longer reconcile his personal values and political beliefs with what the PDP currently represents.

He stressed that political parties should promote ideas, discipline, and constructive engagement, not constant internal battles.

Suswam said stepping aside was the most honourable option for him, while wishing the party well if it eventually resolves its long-standing challenges.
