Tension has reportedly returned to Ikire, headquarters of Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State, following a violent clash over the control of the Naira and Kobo Garage, with at least five people feared dead and several others injured.
The incident occurred on Monday, August 24, 2026, amid an alleged struggle between rival groups over control of the motor park. Reports identified the victims as three commercial bus drivers and two passersby, although their identities had not been independently established at the time of reporting.
The confrontation reportedly involved firearms, machetes and other dangerous weapons. Videos from the scene showed bodies lying on the ground, including one person who appeared to have sustained a gunshot wound.
The clash has heightened concerns over renewed political tension in Osun following the August 15 governorship election, which was won by Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Some reports have linked the dispute to competing claims over control of motor parks by groups associated with rival political interests. However, these claims remain allegations and have not been independently established.
The Osun State Police Command has confirmed that shooting occurred around the garage, but said it was still gathering information before confirming the reported casualty figures. Police spokesperson SP Abiodun Ojelabi said the command was investigating the situation.
A civil society coalition has also called for an independent investigation, particularly into allegations concerning the conduct of security personnel during the incident. Those allegations remain unproven.
The development has raised fresh concerns about the ability of authorities to prevent post-election violence from spilling into local communities and commercial centres.
