The Federal Government has officially renamed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway, citing the President’s longstanding vision for the landmark infrastructure project.
The announcement was made on Friday, July 17, 2026, by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, during a media briefing in Abuja. Umahi said the decision was taken in recognition of President Tinubu’s role in conceiving the coastal highway project nearly three decades ago while serving as Governor of Lagos State. He described the renaming as a fitting tribute to Tinubu’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s transport infrastructure.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a strategic 750-kilometre road project designed to connect Lagos with Calabar, traversing several coastal states to enhance regional connectivity, stimulate economic activities, boost tourism and facilitate trade.
According to the Federal Ministry of Works, significant progress has already been made on various sections of the project, with construction continuing across multiple corridors.
The renaming has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians, with supporters describing it as deserved recognition for Tinubu’s infrastructure vision, while critics questioned the timing of naming the highway after the President before its completion.
Despite the differing opinions, the government maintains that the project remains a flagship national infrastructure initiative aimed at driving long-term economic growth and national development.
