Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has asserted that Nigeria’s ongoing insecurity could be effectively addressed within six months if the Federal Government shows genuine commitment.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Monday, Ndume expressed his concern over the recent rise in violence, particularly in the North-East region. He emphasized that decisive action and political will are essential, moving beyond mere complaints.
“It is not about complaining. It is not about asking someone like me, as a senator, to explain why these issues persist. I firmly believe that if the President and the Federal Government of Nigeria are serious about tackling this, we could end this insecurity in six months,” Ndume stated.
He outlined that the key steps involve training and adequately equipping the military, as well as providing necessary motivation for the troops.
Ndume also lamented the tragic loss of military personnel, including senior officers, which underscores deeper operational challenges within the armed forces. “After killing their commanders, they now come back to kill our commanders, and they are still taking about five, six, or even seven. Just today, I understand we lost a colonel and some soldiers in Northern Borno. This should not continue; this is now the problem,” he added.
The senator further attributed the deteriorating security situation to the inconsistent and incomplete implementation of security strategies. “The escalating security situation has been exacerbated by challenges and threats, alongside actions that have never been fully executed. We must take this matter seriously; we need to walk the talk,” Ndume concluded.
