FG Approves ₦1 Trillion Metropolitan Rail Project for Kano

By Paul Joseph

Barely three days after Governor Abba Yusuf switched to the APC, President Tinubu’s administration has greenlit the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for Kano State. This initiative aims to enhance urban transportation, stimulate economic activities, and alleviate traffic congestion in the state capital.

The announcement was made by Governor Abba Yusuf while speaking to members of the state delegation that participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Borno State. The information was shared in a statement released on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

“The Federal Government has sanctioned the construction of a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for Kano State, marking a significant step towards transforming urban transportation,” the statement indicated.

Yusuf noted that the rail project would establish a modern, efficient, and affordable mass transit system connecting key districts within the Kano metropolis, thereby improving mobility and fostering trade and investment.

“The Kano Metropolitan Rail Service will revolutionize public transportation in the state by offering a reliable, safe, and affordable means of travel for residents throughout the metropolis,” the governor stated.

He explained that his administration’s choice to politically align with the Federal Government under the All Progressives Congress was motivated by the desire to attract significant development projects to Kano State.

“Our collaboration with the Federal Government is driven by the interests of the Kano people and the urgent need for critical infrastructure that will promote development and economic growth,” Yusuf remarked.

He characterized the rail service as a pivotal intervention that would greatly enhance the quality of life for residents and reposition Kano as a key transportation hub in Northern Nigeria.

The governor assured that the state government would collaborate closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure the project’s smooth implementation, transparency in execution, and maximum benefits for the state’s residents.

Yusuf also expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for approving the project and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting federal initiatives through complementary policies and infrastructure development.
