Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has leveled serious allegations against FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, claiming he has secured loans for the capital without the required National Assembly approval.
In a recent interview on Channels Television, Senator Kingibe stated that she had formally raised the matter with the Senate leadership. She emphasized that standard legislative procedure mandates that FCT budgets and loan requests must be presented to the Senate through the relevant committee for thorough review and approval. According to Kingibe, this process has been bypassed under the current FCT administration.
“I have never seen Wike come to the National Assembly and before the Senate to ask for approval of anything,” Kingibe asserted.
The Senator clarified that her allegations are based on a review of Debt Management Office (DMO) records spanning from August 2023 to March 2026. She maintained that these official documents show no evidence of legislative authorization for the loans in question.
“I am definitely saying he has been taking loans without the approval of the National Assembly. I don’t know about the House, but certainly not the Senate,” she added.
Challenging those who might dispute her findings, the Senator invited anyone with contrary evidence to produce official parliamentary records. “If anybody contradicts me, they should bring the Votes and Proceedings of the day that Wike came to the National Assembly to ask for approval for anything,” she said.
Drawing a parallel between the Minister and the President, Kingibe noted that President Bola Tinubu consistently submits loan and appointment requests to the National Assembly for legislative oversight. She argued that the FCT Minister’s authority cannot supersede that of the President who appointed him.
Kingibe’s remarks intensify the ongoing scrutiny of the FCT administration’s financial dealings, as she insists that there is no documentation to prove that the mandatory constitutional process was followed.
