A suspected improvised explosive device detonated in the early hours of Wednesday at the Bayelsa State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa.
The blast triggered an emergency response from security agencies and led to a temporary disruption of official duties at the complex.
The incident occurred around 6:00 am, prompting swift action from the Bayelsa State Police Command.
Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Iyamah, assured residents that no casualties were recorded and no property was damaged.
He explained that upon receiving the report, he immediately led the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, the Special Drone Unit and other tactical teams to the scene. According to him, operatives quickly secured the area and contained the explosion.
The police commissioner said the site was cordoned off and, during a thorough search, one unexploded IED was discovered and safely neutralised by EOD operatives. He added that no lives were lost and no property was destroyed.
Iyamah disclosed that a 60-year-old man, identified as Pentecost Elijah from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident.
He said the suspect is currently being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department and would be charged to court after investigations are concluded. The commissioner assured the public that the situation is under control and normal activities have resumed, urging residents to remain calm and continue their lawful engagements.
Following the explosion, the Bayelsa State Government ordered a temporary four-hour closure of work at the secretariat as a precautionary measure, affecting more than 6,000 state workers.
The directive was issued by the Head of Service, Dr Wisdom Ebiye Sawyer.
Security personnel, including members of the anti-bomb squad, blocked access roads leading to the State Secretariat and the Government House while investigations and safety checks were carried out.
Authorities later stated that the situation had been fully contained.
