The Enugu State Government has intensified efforts to strengthen Ebola virus prevention and preparedness across the South-East through a partnership with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).
The state Commissioner for Health, George Ugwu, disclosed the development, stressing the importance of proactive measures to prevent the importation and spread of Ebola virus disease in the region.
The collaboration is expected to strengthen disease surveillance, early detection, emergency response and public health preparedness across Enugu and neighbouring states.
Ugwu’s announcement comes amid heightened global concerns over infectious disease threats and the need for health authorities to maintain strong surveillance systems. Ebola is a severe viral disease that can cause serious illness and death, making early identification, isolation and appropriate medical management critical to controlling transmission.
The Enugu initiative is expected to involve closer coordination between state health authorities, the NCDC and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that suspected cases can be identified and managed promptly.
Health authorities are also expected to continue public awareness efforts, encouraging residents to report unusual symptoms and follow official health guidance.
The partnership underscores the importance of preparedness rather than waiting for an outbreak before taking action, particularly given the ease of movement of people across states and international borders.
