An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 22-year-old footballer, Adeoye Martins, to one year imprisonment for stabbing an opposing player with a broken bottle during a football match.
Martins, who plays for White Horse FC, was convicted on Tuesday by Magistrate Olatomiwa Daramola after the court found him guilty of assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.
The defendant was first arraigned on December 15, 2025, on a two-count charge. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in the same amount pending the determination of the case.
Delivering judgment, the magistrate sentenced Martins to one year imprisonment on the assault charge and one month imprisonment for conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace. However, the court gave him the option of paying a fine of N5,000 on the first count and N2,000 on the second count.
During the trial, the prosecutor, Inspector Ayodeji Aina, told the court that the incident occurred on December 8, 2025, at about 4 p.m. at the Ben Folarin Football Pitch in the Omisanjana area of Ado-Ekiti.
According to the prosecutor, Martins attacked Saheed Abdulazeez, a player with Jaydyn FC, during an argument and stabbed him on the right cheek with a broken bottle.
Aina said the convict’s actions also caused a disturbance capable of breaching public peace, contrary to Sections 181(d) and 186 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The prosecution presented two witnesses and tendered the defendant’s statement as evidence, following which the court found Martins guilty and convicted him.
