Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 31 suspected internet fraudsters during a raid on a cybercrime training centre, popularly described as a “Yahoo academy,” in Karu, Abuja.
The suspects were apprehended on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at the facility located in Becki Estate, within the Federal Capital Territory. According to the commission, those arrested include two alleged masterminds and several trainees who were undergoing tutorials in internet fraud at the time of the operation.
Items recovered from the scene include multiple mobile phones, 18 laptop computers, and other electronic devices believed to have been used for fraudulent activities.
Preliminary investigations revealed that some of the recruits were allegedly lured from Benue State with promises of legitimate job opportunities. However, upon arrival, they were reportedly equipped with communication gadgets, computers, and specialised software, and enrolled into cybercrime training.
The EFCC further disclosed that the trainees were housed within the facility under strict conditions. Their movements were restricted, and their personal phones confiscated, effectively isolating them from the outside world.
Investigators also uncovered allegations of harsh disciplinary measures, including physical assault, used to enforce compliance among the recruits.
The anti-graft agency said the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
