D’Tigress Finally Receive $100,000 Each As FG Redeems Tinubu’s AfroBasket Promise

Nigeria’s D’Tigress have received the final cash component of the presidential rewards promised to them after their historic 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket victory.

The Federal Government, through the National Sports Commission, paid the naira equivalent of $100,000 to each player and $50,000 to each official, bringing the full reward package to completion.

The NSC said the payments were made on September 9, 2026, and that all beneficiaries had confirmed receipt.

The development fulfils President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to reward the team after D’Tigress extended their dominance of African women’s basketball by winning a record fifth consecutive AfroBasket title.

Beyond the cash component, the presidential reward included three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and national honours of the Order of the Niger.

The NSC said the beneficiaries had received the title documents, including Certificates of Occupancy, for the apartments and their national honours certificates in February 2026.

The documents were signed by President Tinubu, according to the commission.

Kehinde Ajayi, Director of Information and Public Relations at the NSC, said in a statement that the latest payment had effectively redeemed all aspects of the presidential reward package.

D’Tigress also acknowledged the payment through its official X account on Thursday with a brief message: “Presidential reward acknowledged.”

The NSC said the reward was part of the Federal Government’s effort to recognise exceptional performances by Nigerian athletes and prioritise their welfare.

D’Tigress’ fifth straight AfroBasket triumph in 2025 further strengthened their position as the dominant force in African women’s basketball.

The government has also begun fulfilling a similar reward promise to the Super Falcons following their 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph. The Falcons have received their apartment title documents and national honours, while their cash reward of the naira equivalent of $100,000 per player and $50,000 per official is expected before their next official engagements.
