A tragic incident has thrown residents of Okitipupa into shock after a man, reportedly under the influence of illicit drugs popularly known as “colos,” allegedly killed three members of his family in a brutal attack.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday in Okitipupa Local Government Area, saw the suspect reportedly butcher his sister, her child, and his own child with a cutlass.

Eyewitness accounts gathered by Starnews NG indicated that the suspect was heavily intoxicated at the time of the attack and was acting irrationally under the influence of the substance.

Residents described the incident as horrifying, noting that the gruesome nature of the killings has left the entire community in fear and disbelief. Some locals expressed concern over the growing abuse of hard drugs in the area, warning that such substances are increasingly fueling violent behaviour.

Reacting to the development, a human rights and constitutional lawyer, Wale Odusola, condemned the killings and called on the government to take urgent steps to curb the spread of illicit drugs.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Odusola decried the loss of innocent lives, attributing the tragedy to the rising menace of drug abuse.

“Three innocent people just lost their lives this morning just because one useless guy who smoked colos. Colos smoking has now shown not to be a danger to only the smoker but also to innocent neighbours. This is too bad. We need a new law in this direction. The state government should act quickly,” he wrote.

Sources further disclosed to Starnews NG that the suspect, whose identity had yet to be officially confirmed as of press time, has been arrested by the police in the area.

However, the Ondo State Police Command had not issued an official statement regarding the incident as of the time of filing this report.

The shocking development has reignited concerns over drug abuse and its devastating impact on communities, with residents urging authorities to intensify efforts to address the growing threat before it escalates further.
