The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, has urged Nigerian doctors to consider building successful careers at home, saying they do not necessarily need to leave the country to achieve professional success.
Ogunsola made the remarks against the backdrop of the continued migration of Nigerian doctors and other health professionals abroad in search of better remuneration, working conditions and career opportunities.
The UNILAG Vice-Chancellor reportedly maintained that Nigeria remains full of opportunities, urging medical professionals to recognise the possibilities available within the country rather than viewing migration as the only route to career advancement.
Her comments come amid concerns over the impact of the “japa” phenomenon on Nigeria’s healthcare system, with the departure of trained doctors contributing to shortages of medical personnel and placing additional pressure on those remaining in the country.
Nigeria has continued to face challenges including inadequate healthcare infrastructure, limited specialist facilities, poor remuneration and difficult working conditions. These factors have contributed to the decision of many Nigerian doctors to seek employment in countries such as the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Australia.
While Ogunsola’s message emphasises the opportunities available in Nigeria, retaining medical professionals also requires sustained investment in healthcare infrastructure, competitive salaries, professional development and improved working conditions.
The challenge, therefore, is not simply convincing doctors to stay but creating an environment in which they can earn fairly, develop professionally and practise medicine under conditions that allow them to thrive.
Ogunsola’s position has consequently renewed the debate over what Nigeria must do to make staying at home as professionally rewarding as seeking opportunities abroad.
