The Delta State Police Command has announced that the officer who shot and killed a suspect in Effurun, as captured in a viral video, will face trial for murder.
The spokesperson for the Command, Bright Edafe, disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday. The officer, identified as ASP Nuhu Usman, has been transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja to undergo disciplinary action.
Edafe stated that the officer acted unprofessionally, comparing his violent actions to behaviour that could only be understood from a spiritual perspective. When questioned about why Usman’s face was obscured in the press statement announcing his arrest, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) said it was a professional decision.
The extra-judicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi by ASP Usman has sparked widespread outrage online.
According to the police, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives from the Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence that the deceased had allegedly attempted to ship a parcel containing “a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.” The Command further stated that “the police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect.”
