A High Court in Nasarawa State has sentenced Saidu Idi, an armed robbery convict, to death by hanging for the murder of Hardo Adamu Buli, a resident of Kokona Local Government Area, in an incident that took place in 2015.
Justice Aisha Usman stated in her ruling that the prosecution successfully established its case beyond a reasonable doubt, confirming that Saidu Idi was accountable for the unlawful killing of the victim.
The Chief Judge of Nasarawa State, Justice Aisha Mohammed Usman, issued the death sentence after the court found the defendant guilty of armed robbery and culpable homicide, both of which are punishable by death.
Following the judgment, Nasarawa State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Isaac Danladi, confirmed that the case, which had been ongoing for several years, involved charges of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide under the relevant laws.
Danladi noted that while the court acquitted the defendant of the conspiracy charge, he was found guilty of the other charges.
“After the proceedings concluded, the judgment was rendered. The defendant was acquitted of the conspiracy charge but convicted of armed robbery and culpable homicide, resulting in a death sentence by hanging,” the Attorney General explained.
He emphasized that the ruling exemplifies the ability to deliver justice impartially and asserted that this judgment would act as a significant deterrent to violent crime in Nasarawa State.
Detailing the incident, Danladi mentioned that the victim, Hardo Adamu Buli, was attacked during a robbery in Kokona Local Government Area.
“The victim was shot in the abdomen before being robbed of his belongings and cash,” he said, noting that the murder occurred prior to the robbery, as established during the trial.
Justice Aisha Mohammed Usman affirmed in her ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt, confirming Saidu Idi’s responsibility for the unlawful killing.
The court indicated that the sentence aligns with the relevant criminal laws in Nasarawa State.
This ruling concludes a protracted criminal case dating back to 2015 and has been widely regarded as a strong indication of the judiciary’s commitment to uphold the rule of law and ensure accountability for violent crimes and loss of life.
The Nasarawa State Government reiterated its dedication to safeguarding lives and property, warning that individuals involved in armed robbery and similar offenses will face the full force of the law.
