The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, announced on Monday that 360 appeals have been scheduled for hearing during a special one-week court session in Lagos.
This special sitting will convene 40 Justices across 16 panels from various divisions throughout the country, marking a significant event in celebration of the court’s 50th anniversary (golden jubilee).
Justice Dongban-Mensem emphasized that this initiative reflects the court’s dedication to enhancing efficiency in the administration of justice, particularly noting that Lagos carries a significant burden of appellate litigation.
“Today’s sitting reflects the court’s deliberate commitment to enhancing efficiency by addressing the growing volume of appeals,” she stated.
She urged lawyers and litigants to ensure their cases are properly prepared for hearing, warning that the exercise should not be treated lightly.
“This is not a vacation. Counsel must come fully prepared so we can maximise this opportunity,” she added.
Additionally, Justice Dongban-Mensem called on the media and the public to support the judiciary by promoting accurate reporting and fostering public confidence.
“Judges are not magicians. They need evidence and honest participation for justice to be done,” she asserted.
Speaking on behalf of the Bar, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, commended the initiative and assured the court of the lawyers’ cooperation.
“We assure my Lords of our readiness to facilitate a speedy and expeditious hearing of all pending cases,” he remarked.
Adegboruwa also advocated for improved funding and infrastructure for the judiciary, highlighting that adequate support is essential for effective justice delivery.
