The Federal High Court sitting in Gusau, Zamfara State, has nullified the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary conducted for the Zamfara North Senatorial District.
The court, presided over by Justice Hassan Dikko, on Monday ordered the APC to conduct a fresh primary election in the district within 14 days of the judgment.
Justice Dikko reached the decision after considering the written addresses and arguments presented by the plaintiffs and defendants in the suit.
The legal battle was instituted by an APC senatorial aspirant, Dr Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, who challenged the legality of the party’s previous primary election in the senatorial district.
Reacting to the judgment, Shinkafi described the decision as a victory for democracy and the judiciary.
“I appreciate the court’s decision; it has restored people’s confidence in the judiciary,” he said.
He added that the ruling represented a significant milestone for democracy, stressing that the judiciary had once again demonstrated its importance in resolving disputes within the political process.
The APC is now expected to organise a fresh senatorial primary in Zamfara North within the 14-day timeframe ordered by the court.
