A Jos Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 32-year-old panel beater, Husseini Bello, to four years’ imprisonment for robbery, conspiracy, and causing harm to a female passenger during an attack in a commercial tricycle.
Bello, who was arraigned on a three-count charge by the police, pleaded guilty to all the allegations levelled against him.
Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Magistrate Irene Pati handed the convict one year imprisonment for conspiracy, with an option of a ₦20,000 fine; another one year for the use of force, with an option of a ₦30,000 fine; and two years for causing harm, with an option of a ₦50,000 fine.
The court also ordered Bello to pay ₦150,000 as compensation to the victim.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on March 12 at the ‘A’ Division Police Station in Jos by the complainant, Precious Ikechukwu.
Gokwat said the convict committed the offence alongside an accomplice who is still at large. He explained that the duo conspired to rob the victim while she was travelling in a commercial tricycle.
According to the prosecution, the assailants dispossessed the victim of a bag containing ₦75,000 before pushing her out of the moving tricycle, causing her injuries.
The magistrate, in her ruling, held that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others, noting that the court relied on the defendant’s guilty plea and the uncontroverted facts presented by the prosecution in reaching its decision.
