A Magistrate Court sitting in Ibadan has discharged a 66-year-old man, Tirimisiyu Lamidi, following the withdrawal of a case involving the alleged poisoning of a cow.
The matter, heard at the Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court, was struck out after the complainant, Muhammed Isiaka, informed the court of his decision to forgive the defendant after appeals for reconciliation.
Lamidi had been standing trial on charges of conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and cruelty to animals, stemming from an incident that occurred in November 2025.
According to the prosecution, the defendant allegedly poisoned the cow by placing a toxic substance inside a corn shaft along the animal’s path, resulting in its death. The cow was said to be valued at approximately ₦2 million.
However, the complainant told the court he had chosen to pardon the defendant, citing their shared community ties and the need to maintain peaceful coexistence.
Following the withdrawal of the case, the presiding magistrate ordered that Lamidi be discharged, effectively bringing the legal proceedings to a close.
The ruling underscores the role of reconciliation in minor criminal matters, particularly within closely-knit communities where parties opt for amicable resolution.
