The Canadian government has announced major reforms to its Express Entry immigration system, introducing five new targeted categories and increasing the work experience requirement for applicants ahead of the 2026 immigration cycle.
The changes, unveiled as part of Canada’s immigration strategy, aim to align permanent residency selection with the country’s evolving labour market needs while prioritising highly skilled professionals in critical sectors.
Under the updated framework, applicants across all Express Entry streams will now be required to demonstrate increased professional work experience, effectively raising eligibility standards and making the selection process more competitive.
As part of the reform, Canadian immigration authorities introduced five new category-based selection streams, including:
Physicians (Doctors) with Canadian Work Experience, targeting general practitioners, family doctors, and medical specialists to address healthcare workforce shortages.
Researchers, aimed at attracting scientists and academic professionals to strengthen innovation and research development.
Senior Managers with Canadian Work Experience, focusing on experienced executives and high-level business leaders to support economic growth.
Transport Occupations, designed to fill labour gaps in logistics, transportation, and supply chain sectors.
Skilled Military Personnel, targeting individuals with specialised military training and transferable professional skills.
Authorities also released an updated list of eligible occupations alongside their corresponding National Occupational Classification (NOC) codes and job titles to guide prospective applicants.
Immigration analysts say the new measures are expected to improve workforce targeting while ensuring that selected immigrants possess stronger professional experience aligned with Canada’s economic priorities.
