Swiss police authorities say at least six people were killed after a bus caught fire in the small town of Kerzers in western Switzerland, in an incident investigators believe was likely ignited deliberately but not linked to terrorism.
The tragic blaze occurred around 6:25 p.m. local time on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, along the main street of Kerzers, located about 20 kilometres west of the Swiss capital, Bern. Emergency responders rushed to the scene after flames rapidly engulfed the vehicle, leaving several passengers trapped inside.
According to statements from regional police on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, early investigations suggest the fire may have been intentionally started, though authorities stressed there is no evidence indicating a terrorist motive.
Videos circulating on social media captured the dramatic moment as towering flames burst several metres out of the bus windows, while thick black smoke billowed into the evening sky, alarming residents and motorists nearby.
Firefighters eventually extinguished the blaze, but not before it caused significant loss of life and severe damage to the vehicle.
Swiss authorities have launched a full criminal investigation to determine exactly how the fire began and whether any suspects were involved in the deadly incident.
