Christa Pike, a 50-year-old death row inmate, has been discharged from hospital 10 days after surviving a botched execution attempt, her lawyers have confirmed.

Pike has returned to the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Centre, the Tennessee correctional facility where she has been held for more than 30 years, according to a statement released by her legal team.

“Christa Pike was discharged from a local hospital and is now at (Debra) K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center where she has been housed for more than 30 years,” her attorneys said.

They expressed gratitude to the emergency responders and medical personnel who attended to her following the failed execution attempt.

“She is grateful to the first responders and her medical team for their care in these extraordinary circumstances,” the statement added.

Pike is still receiving medical treatment at the prison, and her lawyers said they would continue to monitor her recovery.

She had remained in hospital since September 30, when she survived an execution attempt involving two doses of pentobarbital, a drug used in lethal injections.

Her discharge marks a new stage in her recovery following the incident, although her legal team has indicated that her medical care is continuing.
