The Bauchi State Government has suspended all commercial activities in 25 cattle markets across four local government areas due to worsening insecurity.
The affected markets are located in Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi, and Tafawa Balewa local government areas, and the shutdown takes immediate effect.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Comrade Mukhtar Mohammed Gidado on Friday.
According to the statement, 14 markets were closed in Alkaleri, one in Bauchi, five in Kirfi, and five in Tafawa Balewa.
The government said the decision was taken to address rising security challenges, including cattle rustling, kidnapping, killings, and extortion allegedly linked to activities around the markets.
Governor approval was granted for the measure following concerns over mounting economic losses and threats to community safety and livelihoods.
Security agencies have been directed to enforce the shutdown order, which will remain in place until further notice.
The statement also urged traditional rulers and local authorities to sensitize residents and ensure full compliance with the directive as monitoring continues across the affected areas.
