Bandits have attacked Girkau community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing one person and abducting an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The attack reportedly occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 10, 2026.
The abducted INEC staff member was identified as Bala Aladan, who works in Tambuwal Local Government Area.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying additional personnel had been deployed to the affected community while efforts were ongoing to rescue the abducted official.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said the attackers invaded the community after residents had been evacuated.
He said one resident was killed during the attack, while an INEC employee was taken away by the assailants.
“Security agencies have been notified and are said to be on the ground. As of this morning, no further report has been received from the area,” Rufai said.
However, a resident, Munir Auwal, said the attackers stormed the community while shooting sporadically and abducted an unspecified number of residents.
A police source also confirmed that search-and-rescue operations had commenced, with security personnel tracking the fleeing attackers.
The source said investigations were ongoing to determine the exact number of people killed or abducted and urged residents to remain calm and provide useful information to security agencies.
The latest attack has renewed concerns over the security situation in parts of Sokoto State, particularly communities vulnerable to attacks by armed groups.
