Suspected bandits on Sunday morning stormed an ECWA Church in Omugo community, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, abducting several worshippers during an ongoing service in an attack that has sent shockwaves across the state.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that armed gunmen forcefully entered the church premises and seized a number of congregants before security personnel could intervene. About seven persons were initially reported abducted in the incident.
Following the attack, security operatives launched an immediate rescue operation and succeeded in freeing three of the victims from the kidnappers.
Efforts to secure the release of the remaining captives were still ongoing as of the time of filing this report.
The Kwara State Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, confirmed the incident and commended the swift collaboration between security agencies, local vigilantes, and forest guards, whose combined response helped to repel the attackers.
Olukoju condemned the assault on the place of worship and assured residents that authorities were intensifying efforts to apprehend those responsible and forestall further attacks on communities in the state.
The incident has heightened anxiety among residents of Omugo and surrounding communities, coming amid a broader wave of banditry and kidnapping-for-ransom attacks targeting rural communities across north-central Nigeria.
