Six kidnap victims, including two children, have regained their freedom after escaping from armed bandits and being rescued by troops of the 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Katsina State.
The victims were found during a routine foot patrol by troops at Unguwan Doka in Faskari Local Government Area after fleeing from their captors and wandering through the bush.
The rescued victims were identified as Mrs. Umaima Isiaku, 30; Amina Isiaku, 16; Safiya Isiaku, 15; Ramatu Suleiman, 30; Muhammad Shehu, 4; and Ibrahim Suleiman, 2.
According to preliminary findings by the army, the victims were abducted on June 22, 2026, when bandits attacked Unguwan Lado in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.
After spending several days in captivity, they seized an opportunity to escape and trekked through the bush before they were spotted by the soldiers on patrol.
The troops immediately secured the victims and provided them with medical attention, food and other essential support before reuniting them with their families.
Reacting to the rescue, the Commander of the 17 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ishaya Ibrahim, reaffirmed the brigade’s commitment to sustained operations against bandits and other criminal elements in the state.
He assured residents that troops would continue patrols and other security operations aimed at protecting communities and restoring peace.
The rescue was announced in a statement signed by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 17 Brigade Nigerian Army, Captain Abayomi Adisa, on June 30, 2026.
