Argentina Stun England to Book Back-to-Back World Cup Final Berth

Argentina produced a stunning late comeback to defeat England 2-1 on Wednesday night, securing a second successive FIFA World Cup final appearance after overturning a one-goal deficit in the closing stages of their semi-final clash at the Atlanta Stadium.

The defending champions looked destined for elimination after Anthony Gordon fired England ahead in the 55th minute, but two late strikes from Enzo Fernández and substitute Lautaro Martínez transformed the contest and sealed Argentina’s place in Sunday’s final against Spain.

The first half offered little excitement as both teams cancelled each other out in a fiercely contested midfield battle. England’s Elliot Anderson and Argentina’s Lisandro Martínez were booked during a stop-start opening period that ended goalless, with neither goalkeeper seriously tested.

England finally broke the deadlock 10 minutes after the restart when Gordon capped a swift attacking move with a composed finish beyond Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

With the Three Lions in front, England manager Thomas Tuchel opted to protect the advantage by introducing defender Ezri Konsa, a tactical decision that ultimately handed momentum to Lionel Scaloni’s side.

Sensing an opportunity, Scaloni responded by throwing on Rodrigo De Paul and Lautaro Martínez, increasing Argentina’s attacking threat as the South Americans pushed relentlessly for an equaliser.

Their persistence paid off in the 85th minute when Enzo Fernández found space outside the penalty area before unleashing a powerful strike that beat Jordan Pickford to restore parity.

As extra time beckoned, Argentina struck the decisive blow in stoppage time. Lionel Messi created space on the right before delivering a pinpoint cross that Lautaro Martínez met with a towering header, sending the defending champions into another World Cup final.

Tuchel responded by introducing Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney in a desperate attempt to rescue the contest, but England failed to recover as Argentina comfortably saw out the closing moments.

The victory sends Argentina into a second consecutive World Cup final, where they will face Spain on Sunday, while England’s wait for a first World Cup title since 1966 continues.
