Apple has announced a long-term partnership with Google that will see Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence technology power new AI features on Apple devices, including the Siri voice assistant.
The move marks a major change in Apple’s strategy, as the company is known for building most of its core technologies internally. Apple said it chose Gemini after reviewing several options and concluding that Google’s system best supports its future plans for artificial intelligence.
The partnership brings together two long-time rivals in the smartphone industry, where Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android platforms compete globally. Despite this rivalry, both companies already have an existing business relationship, with Google paying Apple to remain the default search engine on Apple devices.
Industry analysts say the deal strengthens Google’s position in the AI race while giving Apple a faster path to improving its delayed AI products. Apple has faced criticism for lagging behind competitors in rolling out advanced AI tools and recently saw the head of its AI unit step down.
Apple said its own system, known as Apple Intelligence, will still handle on-device functions on iPhones and iPads, with a strong focus on user privacy. The company added that the upgraded Siri and other AI features are expected to be introduced later in the year.
