All Progressives Congress (APC) carried the bye-elections to the Ungogo and Kano Municipal State Assembly by withholding the New Nigeria people party (NNPP) to participate in the bye-elections.
The elections were conducted to fill two vacancies that arose after the death of two lawmakers in the December 2025: Aminu Sa’adu in Ungogo and Sarki Aliyu in Kano Municipal. They had been given the elective of NNPP members.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf recently crossed the floor to be an APC member, which was last month. The NNPP then withdrew out of the elections leaving behind some few candidates.
Nabil Daneji, son of the late Sarki Aliyu, received 7,484 votes and carried the day in Kano Municipal. He was declared as the elected candidate by the Returning Officer, Ibrahim Siraj.
The son of the former lawmaker Aminu Sa’adu Jr. got 8975 votes and won the seat in Ungogo. In the eyes of the Returning Officer, Ali Abdullahi, he was determined to be elected.
They both had initially been members of the NNPP but switched to APC together with the governor during the run-up to the elections.
Although they were victorious, most of the polling places were underserved.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner Abdu Zango in Kano State attributed this to the time the election was held and low number of parties that participated.
First, the time, perhaps it was Ramadan, said Mr Zango. Second, they think that it is a minor election with few candidates and parties. I believe there are nine of you, Frobert de Vriesen, the contestants, I said.
He declared that the elections were largely peaceful with most of the places experiencing low voter turnout.
