The reported abduction of the sister of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, alongside her twin children in Ibadan, has triggered fresh political exchanges over the security situation in Oyo State.
The opposition All Progressives Congress accused the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde of failing to adequately address growing insecurity following the incident.
In a statement issued by the Oyo APC Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the party expressed concern over what it described as the increasing wave of criminal activities across the state. The opposition argued that the kidnapping of Adelabu’s sister and her children underscored the security challenges confronting residents.
Sadare urged the state government to intensify intelligence gathering, improve surveillance mechanisms and strengthen collaboration with security agencies to curb criminal activities and safeguard lives and property.
Although Governor Makinde did not directly address the APC’s criticism over the incident, he maintained that his administration was working closely with federal security agencies to tackle kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state.
According to reports, the governor stated that specialised security teams had been deployed to combat criminal activities, adding that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of abducted victims and enhance public safety.
The incident has renewed concerns over the persistence of kidnapping in parts of the country, with security experts attributing the trend to factors such as intelligence gaps, inadequate surveillance infrastructure, porous rural communities and economic hardship.
While political actors continue to trade blame over the development, many residents remain focused on the need for effective security measures and concrete results in the fight against crime across Oyo State.
