The driver involved in the road accident that left former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, injured and claimed the lives of two of his friends has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State.
The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, was charged with multiple offences, including reckless driving and driving without a valid licence.
According to the prosecution, Kayode drove a Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle in a dangerous and careless manner along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, an action that allegedly led to the fatal crash. The court was told that two passengers travelling with Joshua at the time of the accident died as a result of the incident.
The prosecution further stated that the defendant was speeding and driving without due regard to road conditions and public safety. He was also accused of operating the vehicle without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to Nigerian law.
Kayode, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against him.
In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate granted the defendant bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties. He was, however, ordered to be remanded at the Sagamu Correctional Centre pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions. The case was subsequently adjourned for trial.
Meanwhile, investigations by the Federal Road Safety Corps reportedly attributed the accident to overspeeding and wrongful overtaking, which allegedly caused the vehicle to crash into a stationary truck.
Joshua, who sustained injuries in the accident, was treated at a medical facility in Lagos and later discharged, while investigations into the crash are ongoing.
