Nigeria’s Senate witnessed a tense moment as Godswill Akpabio and Adams Oshiomhole clashed during plenary over the interpretation of newly amended Senate leadership rules.
The incident occurred on May 6, 2026, during the consideration of the Votes and Proceedings, when Oshiomhole raised a point of order. Akpabio ruled him out of order, stating that such interventions are not permitted at that stage under the Senate Standing Orders.
Despite clarification from other lawmakers, including former Chief Whip Orji Kalu, Oshiomhole persisted, leading to a heated exchange that briefly disrupted proceedings.
The Senate President warned the Edo North senator against further disorderly conduct and insisted on adherence to established parliamentary rules.
The disagreement is linked to recent amendments to the Senate’s standing rules, which introduced stricter eligibility criteria for leadership positions, including the requirement for prior legislative experience.
Normal proceedings later resumed after interventions from other lawmakers, but the episode highlights ongoing tensions within the chamber following the rule changes.
