Senator Godswill Akpabio has thrown his weight behind the creation of Anioma State, proposing Asaba as the capital of what would be carved out from the current Delta State.
The announcement came on Thursday, March 26, 2026, during a public forum addressing calls for state restructuring and regional representation in Nigeria’s South-South geopolitical zone.
Akpabio argued that the formation of Anioma State would enhance political representation, improve resource allocation, and promote development for the Delta North and Delta Central communities. Highlighting Warri’s economic and infrastructural prominence, he suggested it as the ideal administrative and commercial hub for the proposed state.
The proposal has reignited debates around federal restructuring, ethnic identity, and state creation, with proponents seeing it as a long-overdue recognition of Anioma cultural and political interests. Critics, however, caution that such moves could fuel tensions over boundary adjustments and resource control, echoing past disputes in Nigeria’s evolving federal architecture.
Akpabio’s endorsement adds significant political momentum to the campaign for Anioma State, signaling that the conversation on Nigeria’s state restructuring remains very much alive.
