In a press statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Ondo State, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Monday announced plans to develop the Araromi coastline into a vibrant tourism destination, seeking to attract between five and ten private investors to enhance the coastal tourism sector.
Speaking at the Araromi seaside carnival in the Ilaje Local Government Area, Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasised the coastline’s potential, noting that it stretches approximately 72 kilometres, making it one of the longest in Africa but has yet to attract the necessary level of investment.
He stressed the importance of strategic partnerships to harness the area’s vast economic opportunities, stating, “We are intentional about this. The state government will lead, but we welcome investors to partner with us.”
The governor detailed that the state government is actively working to showcase the coastal asset to a global audience, a strategy that is already generating positive interest. He highlighted the introduction of basic facilities by a private operator, including shelters and a mobile kitchen, to improve visitors’ experiences at the beach.
Addressing attendees, Aiyedatiwa reflected on the universal appeal of beach resorts, urging residents and visitors to embrace relaxation by the ocean as a means of rejuvenation. “The ocean has always been part of our civilisation. It is one of God’s wonders. From Araromi, you can connect with the world,” he stated, tracing the historical significance of waterways and emphasising the ocean’s role in trade and exploration.
The governor revealed that land measurements and designs for a new state-owned beach resort have been finalised, with construction expected to begin this year and be operational by next year. He assured the public that the Ilaje local government area would be among the safest locations in Nigeria, citing the lack of crime in the area and plans for enhanced security, saying, “There is no kidnapping, no banditry. Maximum security will be ensured.”
Ongoing infrastructure projects, such as road upgrades and the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, are anticipated to improve access to the coastline and significantly boost visitor turnout, according to the governor.
The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Adesoji Afolabi, noted that the Easter carnival is part of efforts to revive the state’s tourism sector and position Araromi beach as a global destination. He emphasised the need for private sector participation in developing modern facilities like chalets and reception halls.
