Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Wednesday received his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission, formally confirming his victory in the August 15 governorship election.
Adeleke, who contested under the platform of the Accord Party, was visibly elated during the presentation ceremony, where he was seen singing and dancing while celebrating his re-election.
The certificate presentation followed his declaration as the winner of the election by INEC on Sunday.
Adeleke secured 511,067 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 444,815 votes.
The governor won in 19 of the 30 local government areas in the state, while Oyebamiji secured victories in the remaining 11.
The presentation of the certificate marks an important step in the formal confirmation of Adeleke’s mandate for another term in office.
Adeleke had, shortly after his victory, thanked Osun residents for their support and pledged to build on the achievements of his first term.
He also promised to address areas where his administration had fallen short while pursuing policies aimed at improving the lives of residents.
The governor’s celebration at the certificate presentation comes against the backdrop of a closely contested election that has generated political reactions from both the Accord Party and the APC.
The APC candidate and his party have continued to face questions over whether the election result would be challenged in court.
Adeleke’s victory nevertheless secures him another four-year term as governor of Osun State.
