Hon. Nafiu Bala, the factional national chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has firmly denied resigning from his party leadership position, rejecting a circulated resignation letter as bogus and alleging that his signature was forged.
The repudiation was made in a video statement on Friday, April 3, 2026, amid an escalating leadership crisis within the opposition party.
Bala said the documents claiming he resigned as national vice chairman in May 2025 did not originate from him and were not signed by him, stressing that any genuine resignation from his side would have been issued on official ADC letterhead. He clarified that he assumed the role of acting national chairman after former party officials, including Chief Ralph Nwosu, stepped down in July 2025 and that he continues in that capacity under the party’s constitution.
The controversy comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently withdrew recognition of both rival ADC leadership factions amid unresolved litigation, leading to confusion over party representation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In response, rival ADC leader Senator David Mark has accused INEC of bias and demanded resignations of electoral officials while maintaining Bala’s purported earlier resignation was valid and communicated to INEC in August 2025.
The dispute underscores a broader crisis of internal democracy, legal ambiguity, and opposition fragmentation in Nigeria’s political landscape, raising questions about party cohesion and electoral credibility as the country approaches crucial polls.
