The presidential candidate of the Accord Party, Prof. Christopher Imumolen, has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential election and endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term, saying his decision was driven by the need to put national interest above personal ambition.
Imumolen announced his withdrawal in a statement issued on Wednesday after what he described as extensive consultations with political associates, party stakeholders and supporters across the country.
He said the decision was difficult but became necessary after reviewing Nigeria’s political and economic realities and concluding that national unity should take precedence over individual political aspirations.
According to him, the country is at a critical stage where political leaders must embrace collaboration rather than deepen divisions.
Imumolen also argued that the Tinubu administration had initiated wide-ranging reforms aimed at repositioning the economy and strengthening key institutions, adding that continuity would give the policies time to achieve their objectives.
“I have decided to withdraw from the presidential race and throw my full support behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election,” he said.
He stressed that his endorsement should not be interpreted as political surrender or weakness but as a deliberate sacrifice in the interest of stability and national cohesion.
The former presidential candidate urged members of the Accord Party, his supporters and Nigerians to back Tinubu’s re-election bid, insisting that the country’s progress should outweigh partisan considerations.
Imumolen also appealed to political actors across party lines to embrace issue-based politics capable of promoting economic growth, improving national security and advancing social development.
He added that history would judge political leaders by the sacrifices they make for Nigeria’s unity and development rather than by the offices they hold.
