Social commentator and businessman, Isaac Fayose, has challenged Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his claim that President Bola Tinubu would secure victory in Abuja in the 2027 presidential election.
Fayose, while speaking on News Central TV on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, claimed that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), would win the Federal Capital Territory if the election were held based on the current political mood.
His comments followed Wike’s recent assertion that the opposition lacks sufficient support in Abuja and that the 2027 presidential contest would be straightforward for Tinubu, including in Rivers State and the FCT.
Disagreeing with the FCT Minister, Fayose declared that Abuja remained a stronghold for Obi and the NDC.
“Abuja is NDC, Abuja is Peter Obi,” he said.
Fayose also raised concerns about the conduct of the 2027 election, alleging that attempts could be made to suppress votes or manipulate the outcome.
He said opposition supporters were already considering ways to protect their votes and prevent any alleged electoral manipulation.
“People are ready to vote. All we are scared of now is what angle are they going to suppress us from this time? This is the only area we are trying to fine-tune,” Fayose said.
He urged Nigerians to engage voters directly and conduct informal opinion surveys to gauge public sentiment ahead of the election.
According to him, such exercises are common in some other countries before elections and could provide an indication of voters’ preferences.
“Go to the street and try to talk to one or two people. Ask them, ‘Who are you going to vote for?’” he said.
Fayose’s comments come as political parties and opposition groups intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with Abuja expected to remain an important political battleground.
