Senator Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe has welcomed the Supreme Court judgment on the leadership dispute within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the ruling as a significant reinforcement of democratic order and institutional legitimacy in Nigeria’s political space.
The Supreme Court recently resolved key aspects of the internal leadership tussle in the ADC, affirming the recognition of its national leadership structure amid months of legal contestation between rival factions.
The judgment is part of a wider judicial process aimed at clarifying authority within the party following competing claims over national offices.
Reacting to the ruling, Abaribe said the decision goes beyond party politics, stressing that it strengthens the rule of law and reaffirms the judiciary’s role as the final arbiter in democratic disputes. He noted that stable political parties are essential to national development and credible elections.
The ADC has recently been involved in multiple leadership controversies that triggered court interventions and temporary regulatory actions by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), making judicial clarity critical ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Analysts say the Supreme Court’s intervention could help reduce internal fragmentation within opposition parties, though they caution that political reconciliation will still depend on internal consensus-building rather than legal rulings alone.
The development underscores a broader theme in Nigeria’s democracy: where courts increasingly serve as stabilising institutions in resolving intra-party conflicts that could otherwise undermine electoral preparedness and political continuity.
