A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Edo State, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
The incident occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026, according to the Edo State Police Command. Uwuigbe, who was a lecturer in the university’s Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, had reportedly checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
Police spokesperson ASP Eno Ikoedem said the command received a report at about 8pm that the lecturer had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the woman.
According to the police, Uwuigbe subsequently asked the woman to go out and purchase water. When she returned, she reportedly found him lying lifeless in the room and raised the alarm.
The hotel owner, manager and the woman have been arrested and detained as investigators work to establish what happened before the lecturer’s death. His remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
AAU confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but stressed that the incident occurred outside the university premises and was unrelated to the institution’s official activities. The university also clarified that the woman involved was not an AAU student.
The police investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not established the cause of Uwuigbe’s death or suggested that the woman or the hotel operators caused his death.
