Ten years after the death of Nigerian football icon Stephen Keshi, plans have been concluded to immortalise the former Super Eagles captain and coach on the Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos.
The initiative, supported by renowned businessman and aviation entrepreneur Allen Onyema, is intended to honour Keshi’s outstanding contributions to Nigerian football, African sports development, and international sports diplomacy. The unveiling is expected to coincide with activities marking the tenth anniversary of his passing.
Widely known as “The Big Boss,” Keshi remains one of the most accomplished figures in African football history. He captained Nigeria to victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and later achieved another historic feat by leading the Nigeria national football team to triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations as head coach. This rare achievement placed him among the select few individuals to win the continental title both as a player and as a coach.
Officials involved in the project described Keshi as a symbol of resilience, patriotism, and leadership whose achievements transcended football.
They noted that his success on the pitch and on the sidelines helped elevate Nigeria’s global sporting reputation while inspiring generations of athletes across Africa.
Beyond his trophies and accolades, Keshi was celebrated for his courage in giving opportunities to emerging talents and his unwavering belief in the potential of Nigerian players. Many football analysts credit him with helping reshape perceptions about African coaching competence at the highest level of international football.
The decision to immortalise him serves as a reminder that true legends are remembered not only for the matches they won but for the legacy they leave behind.
A decade after his death, Stephen Keshi’s name continues to command respect across the football world, and his contributions remain an enduring chapter in Nigeria’s sporting history.
