Minister of Works, David Umahi, has urged people of the South-East, particularly the Igbo, to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election, citing ongoing Federal Government infrastructure projects and other interventions in the region.
Umahi made the appeal on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in Abuja while receiving the report of the North-West leg of the Nationwide Federal Roads Project Tour conducted by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
The minister called on South-East leaders and stakeholders to be more vocal in explaining to their communities what he described as the benefits of the Tinubu administration, particularly in the areas of roads, infrastructure, appointments and political inclusion.
“It is a strategic decision that we Igbos must make,” Umahi said, while commending South-East governors and Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo for what he described as a bold political position.
Umahi argued that the South-East should assess the infrastructure and other interventions delivered under successive administrations and compare them with projects being undertaken by the Tinubu government.
He also challenged critics to engage in what he called constructive debate over claims of marginalisation, arguing that the region had received significant federal attention under the current administration.
The minister has previously highlighted major projects in the region, including ongoing work on the Enugu-Onitsha road, Enugu-Abakaliki road and other federal highways. The Federal Government has also identified the Calabar-Ebonyi-Benue Trans-Saharan Superhighway as one of its major infrastructure projects affecting the wider region.
Umahi’s latest appeal places infrastructure delivery at the centre of the political argument for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. His comments, however, represent his political position, while voters and political stakeholders in the South-East will ultimately assess the government’s record and make their own decisions at the polls.
The 2027 election is scheduled to determine whether Tinubu secures a second term, with political parties and candidates expected to intensify campaigns and mobilisation across the country.
