Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has indicated that the 2027 general election could mark his final bid for Nigeria’s highest office, saying he believes it is time for a new generation of leaders to emerge.
Obi made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, where he reflected on his political future and the demands of public office.
Asked whether the 2027 election would be his last presidential contest, the former Anambra State governor replied: “It depends on who wins. But I can tell you, I’m coming to the end of it because I believe that the younger ones should be allowed.”
The former governor said age would inevitably affect his ability to serve with the level of energy required for the presidency.
“I’ll be 68 or 69. So, if you add that to another eight years, I will be 77, or 78. I don’t think I’ll have the energy I have today because that capacity is very important. It’s critical,” Obi said.
He, however, noted that whether 2027 becomes his last presidential race would ultimately depend on the outcome of the election.
Obi’s latest comments come as preparations for the 2027 general election gather momentum. The former Labour Party presidential candidate emerged as the presidential flag bearer of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after joining the party earlier this year.
Before his 2023 presidential bid under the Labour Party, Obi served as the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alongside Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 election.
