The 2027 Enugu State governorship election is shaping up as a crowded political contest, with incumbent Governor Peter Mbah facing 14 challengers seeking to unseat him.
The Independent National Electoral Commission displayed the list of governorship candidates at its Enugu State headquarters, confirming 15 candidates cleared to contest the election.
Mbah is seeking a second term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, while the opposition field cuts across several political parties.
Among the candidates challenging the incumbent is Uchenna Nnaji of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Other contenders include Chinyeaka Ohaa of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and Obodoeze Ocho of the African Democratic Congress.
Edwin Alor is contesting under the Accord platform, while Prof. Jehu Nnaji is the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
The Labour Party is fielding Okwudilichukwu Ugwu, while Nnamdi Ugwu will represent the Democratic Leadership Alliance.
Anthony Udeani of the Young Progressives Party and Afamefuna Ani of the Action Peoples Party are also in the race.
The remaining candidates are Elvis Ugwoke of the Zenith Labour Party, Friday Iloka of the Social Democratic Party, Nnamdi Omeje of the Action Democratic Party, Ken Ikeh of the Allied Peoples Movement and Obioma Nnamani of the Because Of Our Tomorrow Party.
The emergence of the 15-candidate field means voters in Enugu will have a wide range of options when they head to the polls in 2027.
Political activities are expected to gather momentum as the candidates and their supporters intensify consultations with political stakeholders, traditional and community leaders, groups and other influential figures across the state.
For Mbah, the contest will provide an opportunity to seek a fresh mandate and defend the record of his administration.
His campaign is expected to place emphasis on infrastructure development and other programmes his government says have produced measurable benefits for residents.
The opposition candidates, however, will be seeking to turn the election into a referendum on the incumbent administration while presenting their own plans for governing the state.
With 14 challengers already positioned against the governor, the 2027 Enugu governorship race is likely to become increasingly competitive as the election approaches.
The strength of the various candidates, their party structures, campaign strategies and ability to connect with voters will ultimately shape the battle for control of Enugu State.
