Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has assured Nigerians that police officers will demonstrate professionalism before, during and after the 2027 general elections.
Disu said the Nigeria Police Force had reviewed its performance in previous elections and would apply the lessons learnt to improve its conduct during the forthcoming polls.
He gave the assurance while speaking to journalists after the launch of a book titled The Origin of Women in Nigeria Police Force, authored by 96-year-old retired Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dame Stella Okuyiga, in Port Harcourt.
The IGP disclosed that the police had recently held a conference involving commissioners of police and other senior officers to assess past electoral operations and identify areas requiring improvement.
“We have now brought all these experiences together, where we did well and where we did not do well, so that we can perform better in this big election that everybody is looking up to,” Disu said.
He added, “I give you my word. Nigeria Police will do so well, and we will make Nigerians proud.”
Disu also praised Okuyiga for documenting her experiences and preserving the history of women in the police force. She was among the first 20 female officers recruited into the Nigeria Police Force in 1955.
He said the force would acquire copies of the book for police training institutions nationwide to help officers learn from the experiences of pioneering female personnel.
The publication is intended to preserve the contributions and institutional knowledge of the early generations of women in Nigerian policing.
