Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai as Deputy Chairman of his Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The appointment was announced on Thursday by Atiku’s media aide, Phrank Shaibu, as the opposition party unveiled its campaign structure. Kashim Ibrahim-Imam was named Chairman, while Senator Austin Akobundu will serve as Director-General and Campaign Manager.
The development brings together two politicians with long and sometimes separate political journeys. Atiku has contested the presidency several times and served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007. He contested under the Action Congress in 2007 before returning to the PDP, whose presidential candidate he became in 2019 and 2023.
El-Rufai, meanwhile, served as Kaduna governor from 2015 to 2023 and was previously Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Their latest political alignment comes after Atiku formally joined the ADC in 2025 following his resignation from the PDP. El-Rufai was also among prominent figures involved in the coalition that helped shape the ADC platform.
The campaign council says its focus will include cost of living, unemployment, insecurity and declining purchasing power.
The appointment places El-Rufai at the centre of Atiku’s 2027 campaign organisation as the ADC prepares for the election.
