African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Dele Momodu, has expressed confidence that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar possesses a strong pathway to victory in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that strategic political alignments could place him ahead of both President Bola Tinubu and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Peter Obi.
Speaking during an interview monitored on Friday, Momodu said Atiku’s strength in the northern region could prove decisive in the race for the presidency if complemented by substantial support from parts of southern Nigeria.
According to him, the former presidential candidate remains one of the most recognisable political figures in the country and is well-positioned to attract widespread support across key voting blocs.
Momodu argued that success in the North, which accounts for a significant portion of Nigeria’s voting population, could give Atiku a major advantage over his rivals.
He maintained that the former vice-president has the capacity to secure the constitutional spread required to win a presidential election, including obtaining the mandatory percentage of votes across a significant number of states.
The media entrepreneur further alleged that political calculations ahead of the 2027 polls have already begun to reshape alliances, particularly in the northern region, where he claimed influential political stakeholders are rallying behind Atiku.
He noted that the absence of strong northern contenders against Atiku could further strengthen his prospects and improve his chances of consolidating support across the region.
Momodu also expressed optimism about Atiku’s ability to make electoral gains in parts of the South, citing states where he believes the ADC candidate could mount a competitive challenge.
Commenting on Osun State, he dismissed suggestions that endorsements by political office holders would automatically determine voting patterns, insisting that the electorate would ultimately decide the outcome at the polls.
The ADC stalwart’s remarks come amid growing political manoeuvring and coalition-building ahead of the 2027 general elections, with major parties already positioning themselves for what is expected to be a fiercely contested presidential race.
President Tinubu secured victory in the 2023 presidential election after polling the highest number of votes nationwide and meeting the constitutional requirements for geographic spread across the federation.
However, political stakeholders have increasingly intensified consultations and strategic alliances as attention gradually shifts towards the next electoral cycle.
