The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed reports of a political rift between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and APC governors, insisting that both camps are united in their support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, described the reported disagreement as a “false battle”, arguing that the parties involved share a common political objective ahead of the next general election.
Morka spoke on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television’s News Day, following Wike’s inclusion in Tinubu’s presidential campaign council.
“It was a false battle to begin with. I mean, I don’t think there was any real tension between those positions because they united in their extraordinary commitment to the re-election of the president,” he said.
The APC spokesman noted that the Progressive Governors Forum comprises governors elected on the party’s platform, while Wike, a former Rivers State governor, serves in Tinubu’s cabinet and has remained a vocal supporter of the President.
According to Morka, their shared support for Tinubu makes reports of a disagreement between them largely insignificant.
He said the composition of the presidential campaign council had clarified the roles of key political figures in the re-election effort, adding that the inclusion of governors from outside the APC demonstrated the President’s ability to attract support across party lines.
“Governors, who are not of the APC, now [are] front and centre, coordinating some of our activities in their respective jurisdictions,” he said.
Morka described the cross-party collaboration as a significant development in Nigeria’s democratic politics, arguing that Tinubu was building a broader coalition around his administration and re-election bid.
“What we’re witnessing today in our country is novel. It’s really a new dawn for democracy,” he said.
He argued that such cooperation was unusual in a presidential system, where political parties typically compete against one another for power.
“We’re seeing a president who is transcending all of the divides and really nullifying what I call the politics of difference between these partisans and bringing them together under the same umbrella to pursue a common agenda for the good of the people,” Morka added.
Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has continued to support Tinubu despite belonging to an opposition party, a political alignment that has drawn attention as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather pace.
