No fewer than 19 candidates have emerged for the Sokoto State governorship election scheduled for 2027, according to a list displayed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at its state office on Saturday.
The list features candidates from various political parties seeking to take control of the state in the forthcoming election.
Among the parties represented are the Action Alliance, Social Democratic Party, Action Peoples Party, Action Democratic Party, Allied Peoples Movement, Zenith Labour Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Peoples Redemption Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, National Rescue Movement, African Action Congress, Accord, Young Progressives Party, National Democratic Party, Labour Party, National Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress.
Those listed include Aliyu Shamsudeen Ahmad of the NDC, Abdullah Sokoto Abubakar of the PDP, Manir Muhammad Dan’Iya of the ADC and incumbent Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto of the APC.
The emergence of the 19-man field is expected to intensify political consultations, mobilisation and campaign activities across the state ahead of the 2027 poll.
However, the PDP’s presence on the list has triggered fresh uncertainty because of the party’s unresolved internal crisis.
Abdullah Sokoto Abubakar was listed as the PDP candidate produced by the faction associated with the Wike/Bature camp.
Reacting to the development, the Publicity Secretary of the rival PDP faction, Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, said the group was examining the list before taking a position.
He urged party supporters to remain calm and avoid actions that could further deepen the disagreement within the party.
